The Use of Solution Focused Brief Therapy with Youth

Solution Focused Brief Therapy, as developed by Steve De Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, is a compentencies based model of counselling.  It is believed, with support of research, that counselling can be more efficient (without any loss of effectiveness) by focusing on what works to bring about change in therapy.  This becomes a vital concern for teachers that have so little time to be of help, often being pulled by so many competing demands.

In this workshop we will introduce the foundations of Solution Focused Brief Therapy and keys to its application with youth.

Philosophy for Children (P4C)

Philosophy for Children (P4C) is a special thinking programme that is now popular worldwide. It employs a collaborative Community of Inquiry that promotes interactive, participative, and critical processes among even primary school students that lead to mutual exploration of ideas and views.

This series of workshops has been designed for all P4C-interested and P4C-practising teachers who want to earn a certificate  accredited by FAPSA (Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations, based in Melbourne, Australia) as well for those who want to complete their full complement of coursework for Level 1 Certification for the teaching of P4C in schools. These  workshops will introduce teachers to practical activities that support the practice of philosophical Inquiry with children.

Helping Children with Mathematics Through the Use of Heuristics

This seminar is designed to help participants learn about the different heuristics that students in primary schools use to solve challenging problems. Participants will learn the age-appropriateness of these heuristics and how they can guide children to use them. This seminar is suitable for parents and tutors of children at any grade level in primary school.

Teaching Students to Think Aloud
Thinking Aloud is an idea inspired by Cognitive Psychology and by Vygotsky’s ideas of learning. First, as teachers demonstrate a task, such as solving a multiplication problem, we think aloud as we do so. Next, we show students the ‘script’ we followed as we were thinking aloud. Then, students use the same script as they think aloud to do related tasks. After thinking aloud with the same script multiple times, students come to internalize the script. Students seldom have the habit of thinking aloud. Thus, they need time to develop the habit. Scripts give them confidence and provide them the vocabulary and grammar help they may need.

Games for Language Teaching
Games heighten student engagement, and games can be used in the teaching of any language. What is a game? How to create games at which everyone can win? What games can be used to teach various language skills? These are the key topics at this workshop. Workshop participants will experience games. They will also plan and try out games that they can use in their own teaching.
